Testing a Vehicle Battery

Occasionally, vehicle owners may desire to determine the level of charge a battery contains. The task requires using an analog or a digital voltmeter. Digital versions are often recommended, as they tend to be more accurate. Before beginning, make sure to wear rubber gloves.

Make sure the vehicle's engine and all electronic components are turned off. Connect the positive or red lead of the voltmeter to the positive battery post. Connect the ground or black lead to the negative battery post. Good batteries display a charge of 12.4 or better.

If the charge is less than 12.4, check the battery posts for corrosion. Remove the voltmeter negative then the positive leads. Clean the posts if there are visible signs of corrosion. Recheck the battery if needed. If needing to replace your battery or having other maintenance needs, consult with one of our skilled and highly trained technicians.
